Botanical microscopic methods for Bryophytes

Content on this page is thematically divided in two sections: First the preparation of bryophytes for purposes of identification, then a more complete treatment of microscopic methods. Reason is that the use of microscopes in bryology is similarly divided. Microscopes are a required tool for identifying the taxon of a specimen. However, methods employed here are foremost quick with minimal preparation. They are only a small subset of the techniques used to study bryophytes as a whole. They would be buried among the dozen upon dozens of different protocols for fixation, embedding and staining. Thus, they are given its own section at the top of the page. Aim of this section of the site is to establish a collection of microscopic methods useful and somewhat tested in the study of bryophytes. It is not planned to provide a detailed overview about botanical or even the whole field of microscopic techniques. Also, my resources are limited in two important ways. To date, I do not have a dedicated lab at my disposal, so most protocols and recipes were not verified by me. The second limitation is my access to literature. I can only cite from literature, since I do not conduct original research.

Update I recently discoverd sources for electron microscopy and fluorescence microscopy in bryophytes which will be integrated into this site. Also, the theroretical part will be more extensive than first thought so that novices will get the neccessary foundation to achieve good results.
