Bibliography

A bibliography is a collection of literature about a certain topic. Their importance was paramount in the days before the internet, today they seem to be gone. At least, I'm not aware that they are still used and compiled, since even articles and papers back to the mid 19th century are digitized and indexed. Nevertheless, I think they can still be usefull. I found it tiresome to comb through the internet with search engines, even more so at the very start. To find something you first need to know what you are looking for.

So, this bibliography is centered around the topic of bryophytes. But, bryology is a small discipline, many things of interest are therfore published in books or journals dealing with botany, biology or sometimes even science in general. The list will cover books, journals currently published and ones which cheased to, papers which I found to be noteworthy and web resources.

Textbooks

Title Author Publishing information Description
Biologie der Moose Frahm, Jan-Peter Springer Spektrum 2001 German. Introductory textbook, written in a way which makes it accessible to non-bryologists. Covers general characteristics, Systematics, Ecology, Biogeography, Physiology, Cytology and Genetics, Phytochemie, Phylogenie, fossile records, applied Bryology and History of Bryology.
Bryophyta O. P. Sharma McGraw Hill education (India) Private Limited English. Indian college textbook, covers Morphology and Anatomy of Gametophyte and Sporophyte, Systematics, life cycle, Phylogeny, Morphogenesis, sexual and asexual reproduction, Physiology, Phytochemistry, Ecology, Evolution, Cytology, Evolution and Economic importance. While certainly very broad, I consider it to be a second choice. A common thread seems to be missing, and Marchantiophyta are given a disproportionate amount of space compared to other divisions.
Bryophyte Biology Goffinet Bernard (ed.) & Shaw A. J. (ed) Cambridge University Press 2009 English. Probably the mainstream textbook about bryology. Features chapters about Marchantiophyta, Bryophyta, Acerotophyta, Evolution and Phylogenomics, Mosses as model organisms, Physiological ecology, Desiccation tolerance, Mineral nutrition, bryophyte-dominated peatlands, Population and community ecology, Species and Speciation and Conservation biology.
Introduction to Bryophytes Vanderpoorten Alain & Goffinet Bernard Cambridge University Press 2009 English. Can be seen as the small brother of "Bryophyte Biology" and should serve as an easy introduction to the topic. Chapters about Evolution, Ecology, Liverworts, Mosses, Hornworts, Biogeography, Physiology and Conservation biology.
